Marasmus

Marasmus is a common childhood health problem caused by protein calorie malnutrition.It is also called PEM (protein energy malnutrition).It is seen most commonly in weaned infants of about one year of age.
Symptoms:
1)Loss of weight is much more marked then decrease in height.
2)The child is usually below 60% of the standard weight.
3)The muscles of the child are wasted.
4)The arms are thin and the skin is loose and dry.
Prevention:
1)Proper care of females is a must from antenatal to postnatal period.
2)Encourage breast feeding.
3)Supply solid food when the child is growing.
4)Prompt treatment of affected children is must.
